I'm currently working on a new project, it's movie related but not Star Trek or Star Wars. I'm afraid that's all I can say, it also means that there will be very little to show up to April because of the NDA.

Meanwhile Thinkgeek.com is considering the idea of IXS Enterprise posters, a fun idea if you ask me. But: nothing is certain yet. :)

In other news, I'm in the process of converting the Vesta class to mesh, improving some tiny design glitches at the same time. Mesh conversion is tricky, with different output in viewport and renderer... Also I have to redo the textures, this is basically a good thing as the current version relies too much on ancient procedural shaders, they need to go. Still once converted to mesh, the usability is going to be so much better. New renders will look better and hopefully a bit more realistic. :)

Oh also, the new novel Takedown by John Jackson Miller is using the Aventine on the cover. I made the artwork around June 2014. It is a bit different from previous covers, but so far it has been received quite positive. Can't wait to read the book!
It seems the universal press translator is either broken or only translates what it thinks we want to hear.

FUN: I think we have established that we still want to go to the stars. The sooner the better even.
SAD: To see real scientists acting all weird and skeptical over an artistic concept.

I'm confused if my images worked in a positive or negative way this week.

The next starship from this yard is going to cost an exorbitant amount of money. (If you have to ask for the price...that kind of money.) I will deny that I made it and I will never upload a single image of it myself. Really have no desire to go through this again. That probably means I'm going to have a very relaxed year. :-)

Ah well, I always wanted to try knitting.

p.s. let me answer these questions before I go:

Ian Bruce: I'm using 3DS 2014 with Powernurbs plug-in and Arion as a renderer
Plee587: IXS: International eXperimental Starship
John Leo: Animation is difficult on this machine, it takes about 24 hours to render 1 full hd frame. :)
Mat Ollig: Blurred out is a made up logo that (in my own eyes) looked too much like an existing one, to avoid trouble I blurred it out, this was all done before the images went viral. If I had known beforehand I would not have done it this sloppy.
While my intention was to share anything the project I was working on was too important/too demanding to write an article during the "construction".

The IXS Enterprise, a very early concept of the first real warpship. When I got invited by Dr. Harold "Sonny" White and Mike Okuda, I was absolutely stunned. Did that just really happen? A person from NASA contacted me to do artwork for them? Yes it did! After seeing my rendition of Matt Jefferies "Ring Ship", Dr. White thought that this would be a good starting point for a near future "Ring Ship". At least from a STEM perspective. Because that is the main goal: to get a warpship concept out there that would inspire young people to choose a career in STEM.

However the XCV-330 needed some adaptions to fit to the latest warp theory. After making some adjustments, we quickly realized it would be better to start from scratch. I started to draw some logical (in my mind) shapes, Mike Okuda joined in to give some extremely helpful technical advice. He also concepted a 2D version that made excellent use of the space within the 2 rings. I tried to put as much of it into the IXS without loosing the motivational perspective. This perspective is also the reason why I made some (in reality) rather unpractical design choices. For example the windows in the cockpit, (a small homage to the spaceshuttle) the ship would be fully flown by wire/computer, but to have an outlook into space and to give the ship a face was very important to me. This was the main priority on my wishlist.

For a few weeks we kept tweaking and modifying the rough layouts, and when we finally concluded what direction to go, I secluded myself and started to work out the shapes and think over the details. Meanwhile Doug Drexler joined in to get this ship on the SOTL 2014 calendar. That was even better, I never walked the line between science and SCI-FI this close. (Or reality/fantasy.)

Time passed and I kept on modeling. Because the ship is even smaller than the XCV-330 I wanted to give it a very physical appeance. Very little textures and a lot of real surface detail. This did not really speed up the modeling, but in the end did work out quite well. The smallest edge blend on this ship is 2mm, the paneling and even the slots to keep the paneling in place are all modeled. If a tube flows into something, there is a slot where this tube will go into. No "hull stucking" so to speak. Hardly visible, but in my mind very satisfying.

Deadline for SOTL approached and I had to move on to make this happen. Because of the rather fat rings and the short/stubby length, it was very difficult to get a wide shot that would show it all. After a lot of consideration with Doug we finally got a decent angle. When I finished the SOTL entry (this March) I decided to take a quick brake. After a week I got back into it, and started to convert the entire ship to mesh and to name all the parts. (Over 2000 of them) Also I added more details to the underside of the ship, that was not visible on the calendar shot. I'm currently working on the last phase: texturing the nomenclature/signs/arrows/labels. This will take some time to complete. The result will be the best model I have done so far, the most manageable despite it's 80 million+ polygons and most importaly one that might inspire the next generation to choose for space and science. Lets face it, there is an entire endless Universe waiting out there to be explored. Why are we still here?

The last couple of weeks I have been thinking a lot about my future plans regarding sci-fi design and modeling. With 2013 being the last year for the Ships of the Line calendar, it is time to move on to new grounds.

My current projects will take me deep into 2013 maybe even 2014. Since today I have a stop for new projects and that's a good thing. How much I love 3D modeling and design, I can't ignore that the amount of hours that go into it are about a factor 5 higher than what I get out of it. So why still do it?

Because I can! I'm able and most of the time (damn you Black Ops 2!!!) willing to spent hours in front of two 30" screens working on a small mini problem within a huge and overly complex model. I in essence love this, but I also love attention, and so far I always had to be secretive if it came to calendar work. I realise now that this is something I miss from the early days: when any small update I did (in the form of images) got feedback. You have no idea what it does to a person. (In a very positive way.)

I get feedback on this blog and I love it, but I feel I offer little in return if it comes to imagery. So I'm going to attempt to do more visual updates in 2013. Small problem, the early warpship project that I'm working on now is a black one. So there we are again, in lack of images land. :)

Meanwhile I'm also thinking about this webspace, I need something "quicker", something that is more interactive during my modeling time. Sharing things with 1 click for example. This would mean a lot of small posts, making my blog more a pinboard than a blog with articles, but I believe that most visitors rather have small visual posts than no posts at all. :P

Also I'm probably going to change the name of the blog. The last couple of years I mainly did sci-fi/space related items, would like a decent name to reflect that. I guess it's my core bussiness/hobby. :) (Links will stay the same.)

For now I wish you all a very happy and healthy 2013!!!
I'm writing the part below in a chaotic fashion without spellchecks, otherwise it will take me ages and I just wont post it.... That is why I have 22 un-posted drafts on this blog.

The last couple of months I have been busy with a lot of things. Most (once again!) had nothing to do with Sci-Fi or 3D. Argh! However I worked some more on USS Demeter, it's making progress, the hull has to be perfect before I start with small details. In between I got another project that I want to put out: spaceship "Maratowa" for Dutch science fiction/fantasy writer Nick Brok.

The Maratowa is a very advanced ship from an ex-Earth race. It's FTL drive is based on the space folding principle and the sublight/thruster system works on omni directional hyper ion distribution. (ODHID) The Maratowa is mainly used for exploration and is the most modern ship class of this civilization. It features large observation rings and a small, rainforest like, arboretum in the center of the ship. During the design, I decided that I wanted it to be longer more serious, when I have some decent progress on the current hull I will update my blog with it. :)

What else has been going on:

Since early august I knew that Vesta would come to STO in season 7. I'm looking forward to that, I also hope that STO will consider to add some of my other ships in the future. I recently saw shots of the Vesta and it looks good in game. I'm happy!

In Kirsten Beyer's new book The Eternal Tide, Voyager had a feature that needed an entire overhaul of the internal layout. Without too much spoilers: lets just say I needed to cut it in 2 pieces somewhere. This is why my first few attempts have been scrapped and that we have enormous delays! I worked together with Kirsten to give this refit a plausible explanation and I think it worked. Once Demeter is finished all my attention will go back to Voyager. I promise I will finish Voyager in 2013.

Last but not least Matt Haden tipped me about the following:
In IDW's comic "Hive #1" a ship that looks like my unfinished Merian Class variant is visible. If I scale and overlay the dimensions/angle is fairly accurate.

The really big news:

What for me now has priority is the following: I got contacted by Dr. Harold "Sonny" White (NASA) to envision the first "real" warp ship, based on Matt Jefferies Ringship. (As it comes close to what could be a working principle.) Dr. White, Mike Okuda and myself are emailing a lot to get a reasonable good concept that still has a cool factor to it. The primary goal for this ship is to stimulate/motivate people to move into a science/engineering/mathematics career.

In other news:
I once again will be sort of a consultant, in regards to all things ships, for Kirsten Beyer. She is writing a new Voyager book.

Finally a list of ships I'm currently working on or are in the pipeline, in order of priority:
Voyager! :)The Voyager design is almost 18 years old and it is on my mind quite a lot these days. (oh rly?)

While I did some research on what I believe where parts that would benefit from improvement, I'm not sure if I want to go that route. My time is limited this year, recreating a slightly morphed version of the original might be too time consuming to be worth it, also I'd like to use the (re)design as a demonstration of what I'm currently able to do. (ahum...)

Images show a bit of the research phase and a possible (mild) refit direction.

A different approach would be to go more freely and create a ship that feels like Voyager, but does not follow the original strictly. This would come closer to what was done with the Enterprise when it was upgraded for ST:TMP. Clearly it was still the Enterprise, but it also was modernized to an acceptable 1979 standard. (And beyond, as that ship never really will look outdated.)

I just contacted Kirsten Beyer to hear what she thinks about this, and I created a poll. Thanks for voting! :)

Trivia:

The saucer of the Vesta is designed to be separable in case of an emergency

For the last 2 years the sensors have been covered by white or black gel pads that I replaced by transparent membranes this weekend.

This is the first image where the Vesta is firing weapons. Including the forward phaser cannons, in equal yield mode.

Back in November 2008 Andrew Probert came up with the flowing pylon idea, he made a quick swept forward concept as well.

The 3DS Max file of the Vesta is around 1,5GB in size and takes up to 10gb of ram during renders.

A render of the Vesta takes 45 minutes in decent quality nowadays compared to 10 hours in 2009.

Since Friday evening I worked about 20 hours to create this image.

Looking forward to next week, will work on Voyager and on something that has to do with rapid prototyping.

Somewhere deep in my mind I'm thinking about a new Enterprise as well. Also I'm wondering what would happen if I would do my version of the TOS-E. Sadly my time is limited, and I need to pick my projects with care. Voyager first! :D

See it became somewhat of an essay anyway!
My first low poly object since 2003! I still need to do more texturing. (half done)

This runabout was a testsubject: from Powernurbs to low polygon model. (In other words: from 500.000 polygons to 7500) This worked a lot better then I had anticipated. Currently I'm streamlining my workflow, but the basics are there. I learn a lot from this one.

Time to do some work on Voyager!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8087581102389638046.post-52737002044338710752012-01-08T00:08:00.002+01:002012-01-08T00:08:24.837+01:00Quick heads up2012, happy new year to you all! I had a bad case of flu, but I'm feeling ok again!

Currently in development: (in order of priority)

Voyager refit

Learning to model with very little polygons

Demeter

What I want to achieve this year:

Getting the Vesta in STO

Maybe getting some other ships of mine in STO as well, but lets not stretch it. :-)

That's about it, ofcourse during the year this could change around a little. Seems to be common these days.

Tomorrow I will start with the modeling phase of Voyager, I hope to have a basic shape ready by next weekend.
