Voy. update

Made a small start yesterday:

Here is a list of changes that will probably make it to the final version:
  • Define the superstructure/spine a bit more (Slightly more pronounced lines)
  • Replace the nacelles with new versions that are quantum slipstream capable. (Approx 30% longer on the rear end.)
  • Adjust the variable warp field geometry system.
  • Replace the bridge module, with a more streamlined one.
  • Add a thin (5 centimeter) layer of armor over parts of the hull that could benefit from the protection
  • Replace the current main deflector.
  • Add a (sliding or transparent) cover over the auxiliary deflector.
  • Enlarge the rear bay door/bay interior, to fix Delta Flyer dilemma.
  • Repaint the ship in a more porcelain white.
  • Upgrade to Sovereign style escape pods or a modernized "square" version.
  • Upgrade sensor strips with integrated quantum slipstream sensors.
Possible other changes:
  • Swap out of phaserbanks and torpedo launchers for new types.
  • Replacement of the Aeroshuttle with an Aventine inspired weapon system or another craft.
  • Planetary landing system might be overhauled entirely.

  1. Mark, I think you mentioned before that you received new reference material for this project. Did the material include CG orthos of Voyager? If so, would you consider posting them? Good hi-res orthos just don't exist on the Net. Thanks!

  2. When the refit is completed, I hope you'll send spec over to Cryptic Studios, so they can have it appear in the Star Trek Online game.

  3. I would love to help on this project. Voyager is one of my favorite ships next to the defiant and my Luna Class.

  4. I work from the TV series mesh, but I had to port it to 3ds max, lets just say it's not the cleanest port ever, nor had it to be as I only need the basic hull shape for reference. (For 1999 they did such a superb job on it though.)

Ive been looking all over the web for the high res orthographic renders of Voyager, but I could not find them anymore. They have been there though. Right now all I can find are the smaller versions over at: http://www.starshipmodeler.com/trek/voytech.htm

I'm not sure how to reach Cryptic, I also have an Aventine they might like to add.:D "Buy it now and we will add the U.S.S. Spirit for free!"

Sean! Nice to see you! :)

I rarely work together, as an experiment I teamed up with Galen for 2 or 3 ships of the Full Circle fleet. Being used to be working alone, I find it difficult to share thoughts and idea's. Without a doubt this sharing process would improve the quality of the work, but I just have to get used to it.(Lucky for me, Galen is a very patient and friendly person!)
Right now I just want to finish the basic hull shape of Voyager, see how that goes. I'm currently thinking about the hardest part, the flow from saucer to secondary hull.

Talking about the Luna Class, would love to (re)do her in 3D sometime! Certainly on my list of things to do before I die. :D (It's a very short list, and it contains mostly starships that I want to do.)

I have so many projects lately and my time is so limited! I would love to design and model all day, but it wont cover my expenses. (Well not yet! lol)

    I will email you!

  5. Mark, I have the hi-res versions of the orthos; let me know how best to get them to you.

  6. I'm glad you're doing this.

My two issues with Voyager have always been the nacelles and the deflector. The nacelles are just too small for the ship, and never looked quite right. The deflector has such a harsh transition into the saucer. It could use something a little more graceful to smooth out that area.

    Best of luck!

  7. Very cool, I would love to do 2D schematics based off of you refit when it is complete. I love what you did with the Aventine by the way.

i want to see pictures ;-)

  9. Don't think you need to touch the Voyager's Design at all Rick Sterbach knew what he was doing, He is one of the best Trek Designers alog with Probert and Jefferies!

  10. Thanks for the nice words, but I basically told Mark he could go crazy with it. I'd love to see what he can do with an Intrepid refit.

  11. Mark, it's a little off-topic but do you know if there will be an Aventine schematic fold-out (similar to the Luna-class gatefold in "Sword of Damocles") in one of the Typhon Pact book? Can you educate us over in the TrekBBS literature section?

  12. Oh ... can't wait to see your modifications.

  13. What's the status of the Voyager refit?

  14. You do beautiful work mate, just go with it and enjoy yourself. Screw the naysayers, its not a sin to spruce up a classic no n then. ;-P

  15. Voyager was one of the best looking ship designs to come out of the Trek Universe to date. However, I'm very interested to see what you can do with it. I thought the people who put the Vivace-class Voyager-A together did a nice job with that one as well (except for it being a bit too big).

Just a thought... The Defient style pulse phasers have to be on their 2nd generation by now. Surely Starfleet would have found a way to mount them on turrets to augment the strip style (which I've never been a real fan of). Any chance they might make their way onto Voyager?

Another artistic thought. As I said before, something about the strip phasers have always bothered me. The concept is good, but I've always felt like the energy released should just be pouring off them instead of a few single shots. For example, in Generations, the Enterprise fires a single shot at the Bird of Prey. It was standard next-gen fair. However, in the DS9, during one of the battles, a pair of Galaxy glass ships rip apart a Cardasian ship. When the first Galaxy fires the first beam, a second is already preparing to fire from the same array. Both hit at the same time. It seems like a much more effective use of strips. It seems to make sense to me that a big ship like the Galaxy could fire 3 or 4 beams form their main array at the same time while 3 or 4 are already charging. Even though Voyager had the same power in it's phasers, perhaps due to size, it was limited to only one per main array. Otherwise, it's packing the same firepower as a Galaxy which doesn't make sense.

Oh well. Just food for thought for your awesome work.
